Healthy Student Relationships

It's Explicit

• Clear
• Cannot be assumed or implied
• Requires a verbal confirmation i.e. “Yes!” or “I’d be open to try.”

It's Ongoing

• Can be changed/revoked at any time
• Is comfortable
• Is asked for and communicated when the type or degree of  activity changes i.e. “Is this still okay?”

It’s Freely Given

• Given without risk of coercion, threats, or manipulation
• Cannot be given if person is under influence of alcohol or drugs
• Cannot be given if person is unconscious

It’s Based on Equal Power

• Is between peers - all parties must be of legal age to consent
• Cannot be obtained if a person abuses their position of authority or power

Consent is Not

• "Well, they didn’t say no..."
• "He told his friend I would."
• "We already did it before."
• "They were quiet and didn’t stop me."
• "They just needed some convincing..."
• "She was flirting with me."
• "He told me he’d post the nudes I sent him if I didn’t."
• "They sent  me a nude and said they wanted to in a text."

• Someone taking photos without your consent to advertise availability for sex online?

• Being forced or persuaded to have sex in exchange for profit because someone threatened physical harm to someone you care about?
• Being under the age of 18 involved in any sex act or production of any sexualized images, for profit?

We're Here to Listen

Most importantly, we are here to listen and support you. The school administrator, counselor, or social worker will talk with you about your safety and your needs. You will have immediate resources so that you can feel safe in the community and at school.

We're Here to Support

Staff will meet with you to talk about what you need at school and how we can support you in classes and school activities.

We're Here to Discuss

If something happened at school or affects the school environment, it probably breaks school rules and needs to be looked into. A school administrator will talk with you about what they will do to investigate and how they will support you.

We're Here to Inform

All school employees are mandatory reporters and may need to make a report to law enforcement or the Oregon Department of Human Services depending on the situation. Please talk with a school employee if you have any questions or concerns about mandatory reporting.

We're Here to Protect

The district has a policy that protects students who report safety concerns in good faith. This means you will not get in trouble for reporting sexual harassment, assault, sex trafficking, or relationship abuse, even if you did something against school rules, like using drugs or alcohol, when it happened. This rule is to make sure students feel safe to speak up without fear.

• Name, date of birth, race and gender for every adult and child involved.
• Relationship of the alleged perpetrator to the child. When the next contact may be.
• Contact info for those involved.
• Description of the suspected abuse. Include any physical, mental or sexual injuries. Tell when and where.
• Description of the child’s disability or special needs, if any.
• Cultural or language considerations, ethnicity and American Indian or Alaska Native heritage.

As a mandatory reporter, by law, you must make a report right away. For mandatory reporting rules see ORS 419B.005 to 0025 or the DHS website.
