Weapon Detection Systems
We are committed to maintaining safe, welcoming, and productive learning environments. The use of weapons detection systems is an important step in enhancing security measures across our schools.
About Weapons Detection Systems
As a leader in school safety, our district is always working to enhance the security of our students, staff, and school communities. Starting in 2025, advanced weapons detection systems will be implemented in our comprehensive high schools and the Roberts Structured Learning campus. These systems use sophisticated technology to identify restricted items, such as vapes, weapons, and other dangerous items, without simply alerting to all metal objects.
This decision follows a successful six-week pilot program in 2024 at South Salem High School. During the pilot program, behavior issues and attendance violations decreased, attendance improved, and most surveyed students and staff reported feeling safer. The program demonstrated positive results, and feedback from more than 1,100 community members helped shape the next steps.
This FAQ provides answers to common questions about the new safety systems and what to expect as we move forward.
