Salem-Keizer Public Schools would like to invite families, community members and staff to review curriculum materials being considered for adoption.

Salem-Keizer Public Schools is in the process of evaluating and adopting both a social studies curriculum and an English language arts curriculum for grades 6-8.

The district formed a committee, made up of educators, parents, a community member and a board member, to implement the curriculum adoption process.

About the middle school social studies curriculum

The committee is considering the following curriculum options and they will be available for public viewing as part of the curriculum adoption process.

Social Studies 6 (Western Hemisphere)

  • TCI: History Alive!

Social Studies 7 (Eastern Hemisphere)

  • Savvas: My World Interactive World Geography (Eastern Hemisphere)
  • McGraw Hill: Discovering World Geography
  • TCI: History Alive!

Social Studies 8 (US History to 1877)

  • Savvas: My World Interactive American History
  • Cengage/National Geographic: US History: American Stories: Beginnings to 1877
  • TCI: History Alive!

TCI: History Alive was scored by the curriculum adoption committee using the Oregon Department of Education’s rubric and was determined to meet the adoption criteria requirements. All other materials were rated by ODE and meet their adoption criteria.

About the middle school English language arts curriculum

The committee selected two curriculum options that will be available for public viewing as part of the curriculum adoption process.

  • Houghton Mifflin Harcourt: Into Literature
  • McGraw-Hill: Study Sync

Both curricula are rated exemplary by the Oregon Department of Education.

As an additional note, a middle school Spanish language arts adoption has been initiated because none of the resources had full Spanish companion materials.
