You could say that Jacob Howard, a sixth-grader at Leslie Middle School, has a way with words.

After winning the Salem-Keizer District Spelling Contest last April as a fifth-grade student at Candalaria Elementary, Jacob went on to win the Marion County Regional Contest in May.

That qualified him for the Oregon Statewide Spelling Championship at the Oregon State Fair in Salem on August 31, 2019.

Challenged by words such as “appraisal” and “symbolize,” Jacob won Second Place in the contest and received a prize of $50. A total of 56 of the best spellers from 27 Oregon counties competed in the event in the elementary school, middle school and high school divisions.

Jacob is no stranger to success at the Statewide Spelling Contest. He tied for First Place in state in 2018, and took Third Place in 2017.

Congratulations on your success Jacob. We’re proud of you and know you’ll continue to do big things in the future. Have fun in middle school, and keep building that vocabulary!
