Summer 2023 is just around the corner and there are several ways students in our community can continue their learning, and engage in fun activities throughout the summer! 

K-5 Summer Learning Resources

To support ongoing learning during the summer break, we the district curriculum team has prepared resources for your K-5 student! These resources are broken out into a schedule families can follow throughout the summer, or choose activities on demand in both English and Spanish.

Districtwide Summer Programs

The following programs are districtwide summer opportunities for Salem-Keizer students. 

Migrant Education Summer Program

The Migrant Education Summer Program provides Migrant students with engaging and meaningful experiences in literacy, math, and culturally responsive support. 

The Migrant Education Summer Program invites eligible Migrant Students in grades Pre-K through 7 for in-person instruction, and high school students in the migrant program will receive support through school-based programming the support of migrant education.

Bold, Black and Brilliant Summer Program

​​Bold, Black, and Brilliant is an immersive cultural enrichment program. This program will benefit students and their families by providing a safe space for parents to bring students during the summer to develop strength, resilience, and knowledge of self. Bold, Black and Brilliant will provide students with fun and relevant activities to promote the empowerment of self through the discovery and discussion of African American Black history, culture, and ancestral knowledge for our current third through current eighth-grade students. This program is open to all Salem-Keizer students and registration is open until enrollment capacity is met. 

Native Education Summer Program 

The “S’maaks” summer program is open to American Indian/Alaskan Native students who will enter grades 1 through 12 in the fall of 2023. Students will receive specific instruction in mathematics, language arts, social studies, and cultural arts.

Unified Champion Summer Program

The SKPS Unified Champion Programs are aimed at promoting social inclusion through intentionally planned activities where students with and without disabilities engage together, fostering respect, forming friendships, and expanding acceptance. Students in grades 1 through 12 of all abilities are welcome to apply.  Camp participants will rotate with a group through athletic games and other activities each day.

JumpStart Kindergarten Program

Each year, some of the district’s youngest learners have an opportunity for a “JumpStart” to their educational journeys! During specialized summer programming, incoming kindergarten students have the chance to get a feeling for attending school, understand routines, meet other students and more before the whole building fills with students.

Fast Break

Fast Break is a free opportunity for incoming students in grades 6, 7 and 8 from Houck, Parrish, Stephens and Waldo to learn basketball skills and have fun doing it! Fast Break will be held every Tuesday and Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Waldo Middle School. Fast Break will begin June 22 and continue through August 24.  Students need to sign up to participate.  Transportation will be provided to and from each middle school.

Music Summer Camps

This summer, the district will be offering music summer programs! Programming is open to district students in grades K-12.

School-Based Summer Programs

In Salem-Keizer, each school will have summer programs, which are individually designed to meet the needs of students in that school. Below are a few of the programs families may access through their child’s school. Please note that programs are limited in enrollment and may be invite-only based on student need. 

  • Transition programs for smooth transitions in Kindergarten, sixth- and ninth grade. 
  • Academic recovery programs to support credit recovery or additional support in foundational learning areas. 
  • Athletic and other activity programming
