Weapons Screening Systems, Opportunity for Public Viewing

Weapons Screening Systems - Opportunity for Public Viewing

The Salem-Keizer community has experienced a significant increase in gun violence in recent years, including an increase in youth gun violence. Guns and weapons have no place in our schools, places that must remain safe and welcoming spaces for all.

Starting last fall, the district began exploring weapon detection systems as an additional layer of safety for each of our secondary schools. Over the last few months, district leaders have met with manufacturers and visited schools where weapon detection systems are in use.

Salem-Keizer Public Schools are committed to ensuring all individuals are safe, and that all individuals feel respected and welcome in our buildings. The weapons detection systems that are being considered are highly advanced and specifically designed for school environments. These systems now allow for multiple people to walk through these devices with little to no disruption.
