State Standards
When we surveyed Salem-Keizer parents, one of the most frequently asked questions about instruction was, “What is my child learning?”
The short answer is, “State standards.”
State standards are the things students should know and be able to do at the end of each grade. They represent learning goals for each subject at each grade. The standards are designed to make sure students have the skills they need to be successful.
Standards are established by the state, and all Oregon students are measured against the standards for each grade.
The way that schools help students reach standards is through instruction. Instruction is how students are guided to meet the standards. School districts, not the state, determine instruction.

Standards are long, complex and plentiful. They’re written for educators, using jargon and technical language, so they are not always easy for the general public to understand.
Don’t let the length and detail of standards worry you as a parent. To support students and to help understand grading practices, a basic understanding of standards will go a long way.
