Student Mathematicians— Recognizing Academic Excellence

A group of students and adults pose for a photo in front of a backdrop with "Salem Public Schools" logos.

We recently recognized outstanding student mathematicians at the school board meeting for their achievements in elementary, middle and high school math competitions.

Elementary School Math 24 Challenge

At the elementary level, students were recognized for earning first place in the Math 24 Challenge, a fast-paced competition that helps students strengthen mental math, problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

Math 24 Challenge first-place winners:

  • 4th Grade: Ophelia Johnson, Schirlie Elementary School
  • 5th Grade: Kaleb Espinoza, Liberty Elementary School

Middle School Pentagames Competition

Leslie Middle School was recognized for earning first place at this year’s Salem regional Pentagames competition, hosted by Houck Middle School.

Pentagames is a long-standing Oregon mathematics competition for seventh and eighth grade students. Students compete in five events that challenge their individual and team problem-solving skills, ending with a final team relay event.

High School Regional Math Contest

At the high school level, students from South Salem High School were recognized earning first place at the Chemeketa Regional Math Contest. Each year, Chemeketa Community College hosts the regional competition, bringing together students from across the area to compete in mathematics levels ranging from Algebra 1 through Calculus.

Supporting student success

Salem-Keizer Public Schools also extends appreciation to the coaches, coordinators and educators who support these students and help foster a love of mathematics, teamwork and academic excellence.

Congratulations to these students for their hard work, teamwork and dedication to learning. Their accomplishments reflect the strength of mathematics education across Salem-Keizer Public Schools.
