Student Leaders, Sprague High School – A Project of Joy & Community
Meet the Leaders Behind the Joy
This holiday season, a group of Sprague High School students transformed their leadership skills into a heartwarming initiative that brought joy to students in SKPS.
Through their efforts and a shared commitment to making the holidays magical, they orchestrated the Joy Project—a reimagined version of the school’s longstanding Hoover Gift Drive, which has been a tradition since 1999.

“We want to bring back the joy and holiday spirit and be able to share what we have with the kids here,” shared Malia Nakagawa, highlighting the motivation behind the project.
Expanding the Reach of the Joy Project
This year’s Joy Project aimed to expand its reach. In addition to supporting students at Hoover Elementary, the project invited community members to adopt Sprague families in need and contribute gifts and donations for Liberty Elementary students.
These young leaders took charge of every detail, from designing advertising campaigns to selecting gifts, coordinating crafts, and organizing bags. They made a list and checked it twice.

A Bag of Joy for Every Student
Each student at Hoover Elementary received a festive drawstring bag filled with gifts like activity and coloring books, crayons, Playdoh, LEGO mini-figures, Squishmallows, stuffed animals, winter beanies, Hot Wheels cars, and card games. Through the generosity of Sprague students, staff, and the community, the Joy Project raised $6,552, with donations of Squishmallows and other items bringing the total to about $8,000.
