Global Impact — Unified Sports Leaders

In the Salem-Keizer Public Schools, two educators, Jessica Miller and Brennan Young, are redefining the boundaries of the playing field. Together, they have transformed Unified programs from a localized program into a district-wide culture where students of all abilities don’t just compete; they lead and belong.

Building a foundation of belonging

The vision for a more inclusive district began in 2018, when Brennan Young introduced Unified Sports to Salem-Keizer. What started as a single physical education class has since exploded into a movement. Brennan founded the Saxon Cup, a fall tournament designed to introduce elementary students to the joy of inclusive competition long before they reach high school.

To ensure these students receive a world-class experience, Brennan has secured vital community partnerships with organizations like Dutch Bros, Hoopla, and Coerver Coaching. His work has ensured that the "Unified" label isn't just a category; it’s a gold standard.

From the starting line to the record books

At North Salem High School, Jessica Miller has worked tirelessly to weave inclusion into the very fabric of the campus. Under her leadership, North Salem was named to the prestigious ESPN Honor Roll for inclusive sports. Jessica’s signature event, the Viking Games, reimagines Track & Field by prioritizing accessibility over raw speed, ensuring every student has a place on the starting line.

This commitment to participation has paradoxically led to elite performance: under Jessica's guidance, North Salem is now a two-time state record holder for Unified Track & Field.

"By advocating for formats that prioritize student inclusion, these educators are showing the world that on the field of play, there are no limits, only opportunities."

A global standard for inclusion

The impact of Jessica and Brennan’s work has now transcended state lines. Recently, they collaborated on a proposal to the OSAA to modernize the format of Unified events across Oregon, advocating for even greater student inclusion.

Their expertise has caught the attention of the international stage. Out of only ten coaches selected globally for Nike’s world-wide coach developer project with the Special Olympics, both Brennan and Jessica were chosen to represent the United States. Alongside leaders from Tokyo and Berlin, they completed intensive training at Nike’s European Headquarters and are now certified to train coaches across the globe.

A legacy of leadership

While their influence is now international, with Brennan even authoring and directing national partner training videos, their hearts remain in Salem-Keizer. They recently shared their global insights by co-presenting professional development to 55 of the district’s own Unified leads.

Through their relentless advocacy and extraordinary commitment, Jessica Miller and Brennan Young are doing more than coaching athletes; they are shaping a future where every student is seen, valued, and empowered to win.
