Meet Community Partners - Capital Manor Retirement Community

Smiles of students were as bright as the hearts of seniors in our community as a long-standing tradition of community took place at the Salem-Keizer East Salem Community Center.

Each year residents from the Capital Manor retirement community deliver hundreds of handmade toy wooden trucks to our district preschool students - one for each student to take home. This labor of love takes an entire year to complete and brings joy and lifelong memories to some of our youngest and oldest members of our Salem-Keizer community.

The seniors each take on a different task from cutting or painting the wood to installing the tires and headlights. This year approximately 700 trucks were built and given to local preschool children.

Jim Tacchini, a resident at Capital Manor, is one of the leaders of the project.

For many involved in this project, delivery day is the best part of the entire process. Leaders of Capital Manor share that they like to see the joy on the faces of youth in our community and which color truck they pick out.

This heartwarming partnership shows the power of community, creativity and care to inspire our students and is a cherished partnership here in SKPS year after year.
