At McKay High School, one educator is redefining what it means to prepare students for the future. Marcia Latta, a Career and Technical Education (CTE) Business and Marketing teacher, is providing her students with the literal "tools for life," transforming her classroom into a launchpad for lifelong financial security and independence.

From State Leadership to the Classroom

Marcia has successfully bridged the gap between high-level industry experience and direct student success. Her expertise has earned her recognition at the highest levels of state leadership; she currently serves as a vital member of the Financial Empowerment Advisory Team led by Oregon State Treasurer, Elizabeth Steiner.

While she was recently presented with the prestigious Financial Empowerment Educator of the Year award, Marcia’s true gift is her ability to translate that state-level leadership into direct action for the students she serves.

Mastering the Numbers

Through her innovative Tax Clinics and Financial Literacy workshops, Marcia has created a hands-on environment where students don’t just study numbers—they master them. Under her expert guidance, multiple students have successfully filed tax returns to receive their own refunds and are learning the complex art of effective investing.

These aren't just academic exercises; they are real-world financial decisions that will positively impact their lives for decades to come.

By bringing years of professional industry expertise back to the classroom, Marcia ensures that the curriculum goes beyond textbooks to deliver tangible, life-changing results.

A Commitment to Inclusion and Belonging

What truly sets Marcia apart is her fierce commitment to equity. She has become a dedicated advocate for young women and girls—a group that often carries the heavy weight of immediate family responsibilities.

Recognizing these unique challenges, Marcia ensures these young women have the specific opportunities and financial fluency they need to support themselves and their families, both today and in the future. Through her mentorship, she is actively breaking down barriers and building a culture of belonging.

A Secure Future for Every Student

The Salem-Keizer community is incredibly fortunate to have a leader who fights so passionately for financial equity. Through her relentless dedication, mentorship, and real-world instruction, Marcia Latta is ensuring that every student at McKay High School leaves her room prepared, empowered, and equipped for a secure future.
