We invite families of pre-k to 5th grade students to take part in the following activities!

Activity 1

Watch the video if you do not have a hard copy of the featured book, The Christmas Coat: Memories of my Sioux Childhood by Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve, illustrated by Ellen Beier.

As a family, make "Flora Driving Hawk’s Wojape (Berry Soup)," recipe located in your student’s literacy-on-demand kit. This recipe is demonstrated in the accompanying video.

Take a picture of your family making and tasting the Berry Soup. Write a quote about your experience reading the featured book and making and tasting the Berry Soup. Include what you thought about the Berry Soup recipe.

Activity 2

Go to the website featuring Ellen Beier, illustrator of the featured book, and look at the sequential art page . Use the examples pictured and the art kits provided to support you in creating your own sequence art. The subject of your sequential art should portray a time when you were grateful. Take a picture of your sequential art page.

Activity 3

If you have received a literacy-on-demand kit from the Native Education Program, enjoy coloring the included accompanying coloring sheets to the featured book. Take a picture of your colored papers.

We encourage families to interact with this content together and afterward take some time to email your name, grade, pictures, and activities to us.
