What Is the Rock Your Mocs Event?

Established in 2011, "Rock Your Mocs" is best described as a worldwide Native American & Indigenous Peoples virtual unity event held annually during November—National Native American Heritage Month in the U.S.A.

During Rock Your Mocs, people wear their moccasins, take a photo, create a video or story, add the hashtag #ROCKYOURMOCS, and upload to social media. This creates an online photo album for the world to see and enjoy. "Rock Your Mocs" is wherever you are, and individuals, organizations, businesses, schools, museums, and tribes are taking the initiative to create their own independent local events, too.

Why Rock Your Mocs

  • This event is a positive opportunity to celebrate tribal individuality united by wearing moccasins.
  • We honor our ancestors and Indigenous peoples worldwide during "Rock Your Mocs" events and commemorate National Native American Heritage Month.

Activity 1 - What's My Superpower?

Watch the video of What’s My Superpower? on YouTube. As a family, talk about what it means to have a superpower. Indigenous peoples also have superpowers. Those powers are in the form of culture, language, and dance.

Let us know what your superpower is—share your name, grade, picture, and superpower by emailing Shelby Maerz.

Activity 2 - One World (We Are One)

As a family, think about the words: celebrate, friendship, kindness, together, identity, and culture. What do those words mean to you? Watch on YouTube the video "One World (We Are One)”. Think about other Tribes or other cultural groups; discuss what makes them different from you—language, way of life, foods, regalia, moccasins, clothing, footwear.

What does it look like to show friendship, kindness, and inclusivity with the cultural group that you chose? Share your answers by emailing Shelby Maerz.

Activity 3 - Design your Own Moccasins

If you have not received the featured book, "Rock Your Mocs" by Laurel Goodluck, illustrated by Madelyn Goodnight, watch the video on YouTube. Then, design a pair of moccasins on the color sheet included in your literacy kit or draw your own. Reflect upon positive words that support friendship and inclusion of people of all cultures. Include these positive words along with your art in your moccasin design.

If you have received the featured book, use the pattern and materials in your kit to craft a pair of moccasins. Decorate those moccasins however you wish (beads, fringe, etc.). Take a picture of the moccasins that you created and email it to Shelby Maerz.
