Transforming Education Through Indigenous History
Salem-Keizer Public Schools’ Native Education Program
Salem-Keizer Public Schools’ Native Education Program is a key example of our district’s commitment to equity and inclusion. This summer, the team held two Indigenous Empowerment and Resilience Training sessions for SKPS staff. These sessions, based on the Kairos Blanket Exercise, focused on the history and experiences of Indigenous communities.
The training helps staff learn about challenges Indigenous people have faced, like generational trauma and colonization. It also teaches ways to create a safe and welcoming space where Native students can succeed.
Understanding Barriers
Native students in our district have often been underserved and face some of the lowest graduation rates. The district wants to raise awareness, remove these barriers, and create a school experience built on empathy and respect.
This training is about understanding and healing. I hope every staff member feels inspired to make changes that create a safer, more welcoming space for Native students. Together, we can make sure all students feel valued and supported.

A Better Future
The goal is for all SKPS staff to take this training. While this year’s schedule is already set, the district plans to expand the program next year. These efforts will help every student feel included and celebrated.
Through this work, we are building schools where every student’s culture is respected and honored.
