SKPS Community Update: Adapting for a Sustainable Future

We are just over a month away from the beginning of another great school year, and we’ll soon be sharing back-to-school information with you. We have been focusing on improving student outcomes through high-quality instruction. Our district has two consecutive years of academic gains that show us we are on the right track.

Enrollment Changes and District Planning

Our community is entering a time of significant transition and opportunity for our schools. While our focus will always keep students at the center, we need to pay attention to some plain facts about our district. A few years ago, Salem-Keizer Public Schools served 40,000+ students across 65 schools, and we are on our way to being a 35,000-student district.

Based on our enrollment patterns, it has become clear that we need to close up to eight elementary schools starting in the 2027-28 school year to be responsible stewards of our resources and to protect the conditions for teaching and learning now and in the future.

Our Commitment to a Public Process

Each school is an important part of our system and our community; however, our resources are being stretched too thin to keep all schools open.

No decisions are being made right now. This message is the beginning of a public process, and we are committed to keeping you well-informed about the decisions as we bring them to the school board, the process we will follow, and opportunities for meaningful engagement.

Right now, the most useful and important document is the timeline and process explanation. We are beginning a year-long journey together that will include many different opportunities to learn more and engage in the process.
