Leveling Up Literacy in Salem-Keizer

In Salem-Keizer Public Schools, we know that literacy is the foundation for lifelong success. From kindergarten through third grade, students are developing the reading and writing skills that will carry them through every subject and every grade level toward graduation. Families play a vital role in this journey, and conferences are the perfect time to:

  • Discuss how your child is building literacy skills in the classroom
  • Get personalized strategies from your child’s teacher to support reading at home
  • Explore resources and tools to make learning fun and engaging beyond the school day
 

When schools and families work together, students thrive. That’s why your voice and partnership are so important in this process.

When children see that their family is willing to take the time to come into the school to learn more about them as a learner, it says: ‘You are important. School is important. The work you do here is important and we support you.’ This can make a huge difference in a child’s attitude about school. Positive mindsets about school can have a significant impact on a child’s academic learning, social skills, and overall confidence.

When families come into the school to meet with their child’s teacher, it creates a great opportunity for the sharing of crucial information about their child’s literacy progress. Each grade level has a specific list of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills (called standards) that students need to learn as part of their literacy growth.
