Salem-Keizer Students to Honor Civil Rights Icon Ruby Bridges
On November 14, 2024, thousands of Salem-Keizer Public Schools students will walk to school to honor Ruby Bridges, a famous civil rights figure in the U.S.
This event is organized by the Salem-Keizer Safe Routes to School program with the help of the school district. It celebrates the impact that Ruby Bridges had in desegregating U.S. schools when she was just six years old.
Safe Routes to School
The Salem-Keizer Safe Routes to School program helps students and families find safe ways to get to school, like walking, biking, or using other wheeled transportation. They give schools tools and support to teach kids about staying safe while walking, biking, or taking public transportation. They also organize community events like Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day.
The History of Ruby Bridges Day
This day to honor Ruby Bridges started in 2018. A group of fifth graders in the South San Francisco Unified School District was inspired by her bravery and pushed for a special day for her. In 2024, schools across the country are joining Salem-Keizer students to celebrate this day and talk about Bridges' lasting impact.
