Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is recognized in March each year to celebrate the inclusion and contributions of people with disabilities. First recognized in 1987 by President Reagan, the month serves to encourage greater inclusion and support opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

Building Inclusion Through Unified Programs

As a district we are dedicated to providing every student with safe, welcoming, and effective support that contributes to stronger communities and lifelong success. Our district wide Unified Program exemplifies strength and connection.

Unified Programs, often implemented through Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools, inclusive school climates by pairing students with and without intellectual disabilities for sports, leadership, and, in places like Salem-Keizer, inclusive arts, and academic classes.

These initiatives promote genuine friendship and social inclusion from elementary to post-secondary levels. We are proud that our district is a leader in Unified Champion Schools with many of our schools receiving national banner status, including the first elementary school to earn the distinction in the State of Oregon.

Education Resources

In recognition of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, Salem-Keizer Public Schools has compiled resources that provide learning opportunities and age-appropriate reading lists to support students, staff and families.

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is one of many Heritage & Cultural Observances honored and celebrated within our school communities.
