Making Progress With Safety - Updates to Our Middle School Safety Systems

Weapons detection system in South Salem high school

Because the safety and well-being of our students and staff are our top priority, we continually seek ways to enhance our safety systems. Building strong relationships with you and with our students is a key piece to keeping our schools safe, so we thank you for your ongoing support and partnership with school safety.

Commitment to School Safety

Last year, we began updating our high schools by reducing the number of entries and exits into our schools, along with installing weapon detection systems. At that time, we shared that we would likely be expanding these systems to middle schools during the 2025-26 school year.

Expanding Weapon Detection Systems

All of our middle schools will be adding weapon detection systems this school year. However, this will be a year-long process. To be successful and to protect the student experience, we can only launch a couple of schools at a time, as each school has its own unique needs and planning.

What Families Can Expect

Schools will share specific information regarding entry procedures and estimated timelines with families as they get closer to implementing the systems. Students and families may start seeing weapon detection systems being set up in schools months before we are ready to begin using them.  Please watch for communication from your schools with updates as they get closer to the start dates.
