Honoring Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

With more than 2,000 students in our district identifying as part of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, SKPS schools welcome an array of cultures, each with unique traditions, languages and histories. From East Asia to the open seas of the Pacific, our students bring parts of the world into the classrooms that enrich our learning environments for all students.

Understanding Our Diverse Communities

Asian Americans bring heritage from countries including China, India, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, and Vietnam, among others.

Pacific Islanders are those with roots in the Micronesian, Polynesian, and Melanesian groups.

Our Marshallese and Chuukese families from the Marshall Islands and the state of Chuuk in the Federated States of Micronesia have grown significantly in Salem-Keizer in recent years. Students and families bring with them a rich heritage and a diverse set of traditions and life experiences that contribute to important perspectives and welcoming environments for all students in our schools.

We may recognize Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders together, but we understand that cultures, histories, and experiences are different for all individuals. This diversity and sharing of interests, talents, and contributions of all cultures is what makes our school communities special.

Cultural Events
