Frequently Asked Questions

Why aren’t we doing Grab-n-Go meals this summer?

Federal rules for summer meal programs have changed, and Salem-Keizer no longer qualifies for the Grab-n-Go meal option. Current rules require Salem-Keizer to offer summer meals that are eaten on site at our selected locations. To make sure children and youth can still receive free meals during the summer, our meal sites will be open five days a week.

How are the meal sites funded?

The Oregon Department of Education is providing our district with funding for summer meals through reimbursement. ODE requires meals to be eaten on site at our summer meal locations in order to be reimbursed.

Can young adults age 19 and older receive free meals?

Certain individuals who participate in public or private school programs may have access to free summer meals at our meal sites, even if they are older than 18. For example, students in our Community Transition Program are eligible for a free summer meal.
