Registered Behavior Technician (RBT)

PURPOSE
The Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) provides clinical skills instruction and behavior reduction protocols based upon the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to individuals with autism and related developmental disabilities. The RBT will collect data on individual programs, assist with parent and staff training, and assist Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA) with clinical assessments. RBTs work under the supervision of a BCBA.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
The Registered Behavior Technician works under the supervision of assigned Board Certified Behavior Analyst(s). They may also receive direction or program guidance from assigned administrators, as relevant and necessary.
RBTs may exercise functional and/or technical supervision over other district instructional or clerical classified staff, as directed by their supervisor and required of their assignment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
May include, but are not limited to, the following
- Provides behavior intervention services to increase and improve skills and functional abilities of students assigned to caseload under the direction of a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA)
- Monitors progress and reassess skill development and other identified needs
- Provides direct student instruction in 1:1 settings utilizing a combination of intensive teaching and natural environment training arrangements
- Develops and implements appropriate behavior plans in accordance with student’s identified needs, Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or Section 504 plan
- Develops data monitoring systems for individual students
- Sets up, operates and adjusts therapeutic and adaptive programming
- Provides consultation and support to families regarding students’ developmental needs
- Assists BCBA with assessment procedures, creation of skill acquisition plans, behavior intervention plans, and implementation of interventions and differential reinforcement procedures.
- Communicates with staff, teachers, parents and administrators to implement new and improved student skills into daily activities
- Supports with extension of therapeutic activities to the classroom and home, exchange information and resolve issues or concerns related to the student’s IEP
- Provides training and modeling of instructional and therapeutic strategies to instructional staff
- Maintains regular and consistent attendance and punctuality
- Performs related duties consistent with job description and assignment
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Required Certification(s)
Must hold and maintain current certification as a Registered Behavior Technician
Knowledge of
- Working knowledge of behavioral science and developmental psychology, theory and practice
- Working knowledge of Functional Behavioral Assessment, IEP language, behavior intervention plans, and least restrictive environment
- Basic knowledge of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) or the ability to acquire the knowledge rapidly
- District process and procedure
- Data collection systems including modern office methods, current district practices and computer equipment and applications
Ability to
- Assess challenging situations in order to provide focused consultation to department and school staff
- Handle multiple tasks, meet short timelines and respond to unexpected situations
- Actively problem-solve situations and work with other district staff to find solutions that are reasonable and workable for students, schools, and the environment
- Understand and interpret Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) Communicate clearly and effectively with adults and students Demonstrate organizational skills
- Work in a team situation
- Work effectively with minimum supervision Maintain student confidentiality
- Compose reports that are accurate and grammatically correct Perform basic math computation in calculating data
Experience and Training
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is appropriate.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Valid Oregon Drivers License and reliable, personal transportation Certification as a Registered Behavior Technician
MANDT© behavioral intervention techniques preferred Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid Certification preferred
Work Environment
Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions with routine exposure to the weather including seasonal heat and cold. Subject to frequent loud noises in the environment.
High level of contact with students, staff, and outside agencies/community.
Physical Requirements
Frequent reaching, handling, fingering, talking and hearing. Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment, stamina to remain seated and maintain concentration for an extended period. Hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone. Vision: Frequent near acuity; occasional far acuity. Vision to read printed materials, computer screens and/or other monitoring devices.
Strength: Must be able to lift 50 pounds on a frequent basis. May be called upon to restrain students weighing up to 150 pounds with assistance of one other person. Must be able to work effectively in an environment requiring physical stamina, including the ability to perform MANDT physical restraint techniques.
