PRIMARY FUNCTION

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, the Skills Trainer supports the planning, implementation, and evaluation of skills-specific academic and therapeutic services for school-aged youth in an assigned treatment program. The Skills Trainer implements education and treatment programming in a classroom environment as a member of an interdisciplinary team of professionals. The Skills Trainer provides education, direction, and modeling to assist program clients with their academic and treatment goals for implementing identified evidence-based therapeutic interventions, assisting with academic instruction, and providing skills training. The Skills Trainer provides emotional support, leadership, and direction to all program clients. The Skills Trainer consults with team members, agency personnel, and family members regarding current program client issues. The Skills Trainer is accountable for providing supervision and trauma and stress-informed care for all program clients.

Treatment program administrator and/or assigned designee(s). 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

  1. Engages in positive and appropriate relationship-building with clients, their resources, coworkers, and supervisors.
  2. Ensures the safety, security, and confidentiality of clients in classrooms and community settings.
  3. Accurately completes required documentation of a professional quality and within timelines specified.
  4. Facilitates and leads individual and group skills training with program clients in accordance with the clients’ treatment plans.
  5. Comprehends and participates in the treatment process (from assessment to discharge), including interdisciplinary communication, family engagement, documentation, and relationship building.
  6. Demonstrates comprehension of risk management procedures, protocols, policies, and interventions related to high-risk program client behavior. This is achieved through policy review, formal testing, training compliance, and validated observation which demonstrates these competencies.
  7. Facilitates and leads crisis management and intervention. This includes modeling the nonviolent crisis intervention principles of care, welfare, safety, and security, while providing verbal and physical intervention as instructed.
  8. Speaks conducts themselves in a developmentally appropriate and respectful manner with clients, their resources, coworkers, and supervisors.
  9. Demonstrates cultural awareness and works toward cultural competencies for themselves and the organization.
  10. Demonstrates the ability to administer medications to program clients when needed and in accordance with policy and procedures.
  11. Completes and keeps current all training required for the position.
  12. Demonstrates an ability in their daily work to problem-solve with program clients, their resources, coworkers, and supervisors creatively and collaboratively.
  13. Demonstrates an ability to use good judgment with program clients, their resources, coworkers, and supervisors. Judgment and actions are within the guidelines of policy and trauma and stress-informed care principles.
  14. Monitors and documents program client progress toward goal attainment in accordance with program standards and completes professional documentation as required by policies and procedures.
  15. Participates in staff meetings and training.
  16. Models, coaches, and counsels program clients regarding skills as outlined in individual treatment plans.
  17. Demonstrates knowledge of policies, procedures, and the treatment process.
  18. Assists program clients with guidance in the process of reaching identified treatment goals.
  19. Facilitates academic activities in the school setting as well as community-based outings.
  20. May support regular treatment groups such as DBT and SELF, as well as other evidence-based practices.
  21. Intervenes as appropriate and necessary to facilitate conflict resolution and resolve crisis situations involving program clients.
  22. Maintains clear and appropriate boundaries with program clients.
  23. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities to successfully complete the essential functions of this role is appropriate.  A representative way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience

Two years of experience as a direct care worker with at-risk children and/or adolescents.

Training

Equivalent to completion of a bachelor’s degree in behavioral sciences.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

A current driver’s license valid in the State of Oregon. Ability to work onsite and travel between more than 65 district locations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Proficiency and fluency with Spanish language (read, write, listen, and speak).

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions with routine exposure to the weather including seasonal heat and cold. Subject to frequent loud noises in the environment.

High level of contact with students, staff, and outside agencies/community.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Frequent reaching, handling, fingering, talking, and hearing.  Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment, stamina to remain seated and maintain concentration for an extended period.  Hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone.  Vision:  Frequent near acuity; occasional far acuity.  Vision to read printed materials, computer screens and/or other monitoring devices.

Strength: Must be able to lift 50 pounds on a frequent basis.  May be called upon to restrain students weighing up to 150 pounds with the assistance of one other person.  Must be able to work effectively in an environment requiring physical stamina, including the ability to perform MANDT physical restraint techniques.
