What Happens to My Accrued Sick Time?

One of the most common questions we have received is about accrued sick time. By default, sick time does not transfer between employers. We also heard how important these hours are to you.

To respond to your feedback and make the transition as easy as possible, Salem-Keizer Public Schools and EduStaff have agreed to hold you harmless during the transition.

This means the number of sick time hours you had available on June 30, 2026, remains available for your use through EduStaff, as long as you became an EduStaff employee before July 1, 2026.

• I am having an issue filling out the application for employment. How do I get assistance?
  • The Edustaff Employee Services Team is available Monday through Friday and can be reached via email at contact@edustaff.org or via phone at 1-877-974-6338.
• Do I have to redo my fingerprints and pay the fee?
  • No. As a rollover employee, you are not required to get new fingerprints and incur the associated fee.
• During the application, what do I put under employment history?
  • Add Salem-Keizer School District as the employer
  • Toggle to "use this employer as a reference"

• Do I need to take the required training during the application process?
  • No, as a rollover substitute, you are not required to complete the standard training modules prior to the right start meetings. Once you exist in Edustaff's system, you will see annual required training modules including Bloodborne Pathogens, Child Abuse Reporting, Ethics and Professional Boundaries, and Sexual Conduct requirements which will need to be completed.
• I am already an Edustaff employee. Do I need to fill out an application and attend a Right Start meeting?
  • No, just log into your Edustaff account and add Salem-Keizer as an affiliated district under Access, Organizations and Pay Codes.
• What will happen with my earned sick time hours?
  • If you transition to Edustaff prior to July 1, 2026, the district will hold you harmless and the same number of accrued sick time hours you have on June 30, 2026 with the district will be available to you once you transition to Edustaff.
• Will we make less money with Edustaff?
  • No, the district sets the rates paid to substitutes, and we will continue to set the rates consistent with past practice. Our rate for licensed substitutes is well above the state-mandated minimum rate and very competitive in our region.
• Will we still be able to access SKPS-specific training?
  • In some cases, yes. This is a very broad question but in general, with specialized substitute positions, like for special education, we will be able to coordinate with Edustaff to provide additional trainings, such as MANDT.
• Will we still have an SKPS email account and be able to use Teams and other systems?
  • Yes, your existing email account will continue to work and you will still be subject to our password change processes and other cybersecurity requirements.
• Can I cash out my PERS since it will no longer be available?
  • If you have a PERS account, that is your account and you do not lose access to your PERS account. If you want to devest from PERS, please contact them directly at 888-320-7377 and inquire about your options.
